Match Details;
West Ham were beaten by a talented and disciplined Palermo side in their Uefa Cup first-round, first-leg tie at The Boleyn Ground on 13th September 2006.
They were caught out when Andrea Caracciolo guided in Aimo Diana's cross, just minutes after Carlos Tevez had missed a similar chance.
Tevez and fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano were making their first starts for West Ham but their obvious influence could not prevent defeat.
Marlon Harewood should have, but he hit the post with a close-range shot. That was the closest West Ham came to scoring an equaliser which would have been reward for their passionate display.
The Hammers' second-half rally book-ended their performance as they had started the match in similar fashion.
Tevez, who some felt was not as lean as he could be when he made his debut on Sunday, certainly had the appetite to show his class from the kick-off.
Within a few minutes his neat flick and turn bamboozled Mattia Cassani and the Palermo man was booked for his crass intervention.West Ham paid the price as a virtually identical attack from Palermo saw Diana deliver an exquisite centre and Caracciolo convert with his knee.
Palermo defeated West Ham 0-1.
