Leonard Ernest "Nipper" Read QPM was born in Nottingham on 31 March 1925. He was formerly a British policeman and boxing administrator

He joined the Met in 1947. He was Detective Chief Superintendent on the Met's Murder Squad in 1967 and put away the Kray Twins.

The role of Detective Chief Superintendent Read at the time of the Kray Twins’ arrest is played by former Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston in the 2015 film Legend.
